Dental Implants

Dental implants are durable, titanium-based tooth replacements that mimic the natural structure of teeth. They provide a secure foundation for crowns or dentures to restore function and appearance.

What is Dental Implant Oral Surgery?

A tooth has two main parts: the root and the crown. When you lose a tooth, you lose both the crown and the root. To restore the tooth, the surgeon first replaces the root with a small titanium implant—the same durable material used in artificial joints.

After the surgeon places the implant, the bone needs time to heal and fuse with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for the artificial tooth. Once healing is complete, a support post, called an abutment, is attached to the implant, and a replacement crown is placed on top. Sometimes, a temporary replacement tooth can be attached to the implant immediately.

Dental Implant Process

Using the most recent advances in dental implant technology, Drs. Cudney or Gauger can place single-stage implants. These implants do not require a second procedure to uncover them, but they do require time to heal before artificial teeth are placed. There are even situations where the implant can be placed at the same time as the tooth extraction, further minimizing the number of surgical procedures.

Dental implant placement is a team effort between an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a restorative dentist. Drs. Cudney or Gauger perform the actual implant surgery, initial tooth extractions, and bone grafting if necessary. The restorative dentist (your dentist) fits and makes the final crown. Your dentist will also make any temporary teeth needed during the implant process.

Recovery After Implant Placement

The initial recovery from dental implant surgery typically takes a few days to a week, depending on the individual. However, full healing and osseointegration (the process where the implant fuses with the jawbone) can take several months. Most patients can resume normal activities within a few days, but the complete healing process may take three to six months.

FAQ

  • What are the benefits of dental implants over dentures?

Dental implants offer several advantages over dentures, including a more natural look and feel, improved comfort, and better functionality. Implants are anchored into the jawbone, which prevents slipping and allows for better chewing and speaking. They also help maintain bone density and facial structure, preventing the bone loss often associated with dentures.

  • How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution that best restores natural function.

  • What are the financing options for dental implants?

First, check with your dental insurance provider to see if they cover any portion of the cost of dental implants. Additionally, many healthcare credit companies offer no-interest and low-interest loans specifically for medical procedures, including dental implants. Remember, dental implants are an investment in both your health and appearance. They restore your ability to enjoy a balanced diet and help preserve the natural contours of your face, preventing premature aging.
